1. COMPONENTS OF GAME DEVELOPMENT

Every project starts with this step. Pre-production essentially specifies what the game is about, why it should be developed, and how long it will take to make it. You might have a wonderful idea for a game, a tale you want to tell, or you might want to create one that makes use of a specific technology.

This stage can span anywhere from a week to a year, depending on the project kind, resources, and financial resources available, and can account for up to 20% of overall production time. The team is currently fairly small. There could be a producer, programmer(s), and concept artist. A video game producer is in charge of the project’s economic aspects, primarily the finances. They are in charge of the budget and marketing tactics for the product.

Game Design Document

A game design document is a dynamic software design document that describes the design of a video game. The development team creates and edits a GDD, which is typically used in the video game industry to organise work within a development team. The development team creates the document as a guiding vision that is used throughout the game development process as a consequence of collaboration amongst their designers, artists, and programmers.

Prototype

A video game prototype is an unfinished test that evaluates the functionality, user experience, gameplay, mechanics, and art direction of the game. Prototyping is done during the pre-production phase to see if the game concept will work and if it is worth pursuing. A lot of ideas don’t make it through to this point. The team will frequently begin with paper prototypes to test theories and iron out many of the details of a game or series of systems fast, efficiently, and affordably.

The goal is to get a prototype up and running as soon as possible to see if your ideas work and if the game is as enjoyable as you thought. Prototyping can also disclose unexpected obstacles, which could alter the course of your project entirely. It’s crucial to have others test your prototype because what seems obvious to you might not be to others.

2. Production

Production is the pipeline’s longest stage, and it’s all hands on deck. Production takes anything from one to four years and is where the game begins to take shape. The story is being fine-tuned, assets (characters, creatures, objects, and locations) are being generated, game rules are being established, levels and worlds are being designed, code is being written, and so on. However, because early ideas don’t often translate well in practice, the game is constantly tested and adjusted as work progresses.

3. Post - Production

The game development process continues after production is completed and the game has shipped, with certain team members being relegated to maintenance (fixing bugs, generating patches) or creating additional or downloadable content (DLC). Others may move on to the next project or the sequel. A post-mortem or debriefing may be undertaken to examine what went well and what could be improved for the future. All of the design documentation, materials, and code have been finalised, gathered, and preserved for future use.
